Understanding Sponsorship
A UK Sponsor Licence is official permission from the Home Office (UKVI) that allows your business to hire skilled workers from outside the UK. You cannot issue a Certificate of Sponsorship - the document a worker needs to apply for their visa.
Any UK employer who wants to recruit skilled workers from outside the UK - including EU nationals who arrived after 1 January 2021 - must have a valid sponsor licence before making an offer of employment.
Your first-time licence is valid for four years indefinitely - there is no longer a fixed renewal period. You're assessed for ongoing compliance instead. Once approved you submit a sponsor licence review request before expiration.
Most employers apply for a Worker Sponsor (for permanent skilled roles). A Temporary Worker licence covers short-term contracts, charity volunteers, or religious workers - typically used for shorter-term or volunteering roles.
Sponsor skilled UK workers on skilled permanent roles. This is the most common licence type - used for employees in roles on the eligible occupation list.
Sponsor workers for short-term placements - including creative, sporting, charity work, religious workers, or seasonal agriculture roles.
Not sure which type you need? WorkPermitCloud will assess your situation and recommend the right licence type and supporting visas at no charge.

What You Need
The Home Office assesses your organisation against these key criteria. WPC checks all of these before submitting your application.
Your organisation must be a real, actively trading UK entity - backed by Companies House registration and evidence of commercial activity.
A senior or managerial employee must be appointed as Authorising Officer (AO) - responsible for the licence and sponsor duties. Must have no criminal record or immigration breaches.
You must have robust processes to track and monitor sponsored workers, record right-to-work checks, and report changes to UKVI promptly.
Bank statements, annual accounts and transaction history must demonstrate you can afford to employ and pay sponsored workers at the required salary thresholds.
Your organisation must have a registered pension scheme registered and with enrolled staff (or opt-out records in place) before the application is submitted.
