Introduction

On 22 July 2025, the UK Government released an updated list of eligible occupations and SOC codes under the Skilled Worker visa route. These updates are part of wider immigration reforms under the Statement of Changes HC 997, raising the skill threshold to RQF Level 6 (degree level) and restricting sponsorship to a more targeted list of high-skilled jobs.

This blog provides a clear and accessible breakdown of the latest Skilled Worker visa eligible occupations, including SOC 2020 codes, job descriptions, and classification status (Higher Skilled, Medium Skilled, or Ineligible). This resource is essential for employers, HR teams, and visa applicants navigating the new rules.

About the Skilled Worker Eligibility List

For a Certificate of Sponsorship assigned on or after 22 July 2025, the Skilled Worker route only permits sponsorship for jobs classified as Higher Skilled, unless the job is Medium Skilled and one of these applies: it is on the Immigration Salary List (ISL) or the Temporary Shortage List (TSL) and the certificate is issued before 31 December 2026 (22 July 2028 for care workers and senior care workers), the worker was granted Skilled Worker permission before 22 July 2025 and has held it continuously since, or it is a prison service officer role under the in-country provision. All roles must meet minimum salary thresholds based on occupation, hours, and level.

The official government list provides:

● Occupation codes (SOC 2020 format)

● Job titles and job family groupings

●Classification: Higher Skilled, Medium Skilled, or Ineligible

Jobs not included in this updated list are not eligible for new Skilled Worker sponsorship unless supported by separate transitional guidance.

This table follows the Home Office's eligible occupations page, last updated on 22 July 2025. The legal list is Appendix Skilled Occupations in the Immigration Rules, and the two differ in places. The appendix puts 114 codes in Table 6 (ineligible), not 104: the nine codes marked below as open only to existing workers are also in Table 6, and so is 9119 for every job other than the two named ones. Where the two disagree, the appendix decides. Our guide to Skilled Worker eligibility and salary explains what each table means.

Using the Right Occupation Code

If you're unsure of your job’s occupation code, use the government’s CASCOT tool to look up the appropriate SOC 2020 code:
 🔎 Search CASCOT occupation code

Tip: Always search using full job titles such as “Laboratory technician” rather than abbreviations like “lab tech” to improve accuracy.

Conclusion

The UK’s Skilled Worker visa system is evolving rapidly. The updated eligible occupations list published on 22 July 2025 reflects the government’s push for a high-skill workforce and reduced dependency on overseas labour in low-skilled roles. If your job is listed, you may still qualify for sponsorship—but if it’s missing, alternate visa options or in-country switches may be needed.

Let WorkPermitCloud guide you through the new system—accurately, efficiently, and compliantly.

What is the Skilled Worker eligible occupations list?

It is an official list of jobs and SOC codes that qualify for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route. For a Certificate of Sponsorship assigned on or after 22 July 2025, a job must normally be Higher Skilled and meet the salary rules. Medium Skilled jobs need the Immigration Salary List, the Temporary Shortage List, a transitional provision or, for prison service officers, the in-country provision. The legal list is Appendix Skilled Occupations.

What changed in the July 2025 update to Skilled Worker jobs?

For a Certificate of Sponsorship assigned on or after 22 July 2025, only RQF Level 6 (degree-level) roles are eligible, unless the job is on the Immigration Salary List or Temporary Shortage List with a certificate issued before 31 December 2026, or the worker was granted Skilled Worker permission before 22 July 2025. Around 180 previously eligible RQF 3–5 occupations were affected.

How do I find the correct occupation code for my job?

You can use the government’s CASCOT tool to match your job title to the right SOC 2020 occupation code. Accurate coding is essential for visa eligibility and CoS approval.

Can I still apply if my job is not on the list?

No. If your job is not listed as eligible, is not on the ISL or TSL, and no transitional provision applies to you, it cannot be sponsored under the Skilled Worker visa. You may need to explore other visa routes.

Do these changes affect current Skilled Worker visa holders?

If you were granted Skilled Worker permission before 22 July 2025 and have held it continuously since, Medium Skilled jobs stay open to you, including with a new sponsor. If you were first granted before 4 April 2024, you can use the lower £31,300 threshold and Table 2 going rates for applications made before 4 April 2030. Otherwise the current thresholds, usually £41,700, apply when you extend or change jobs.
