The UK Religious Worker Visa is the Temporary Work route for overseas nationals undertaking non-pastoral supporting religious duties at a UK faith organisation. It allows a stay of up to 24 months. We help both applicants and faith organisations navigate sponsorship and the critical distinction from the T2 Minister of Religion route.
Talk to an expertThe UK Religious Worker Visa is a Temporary Work immigration route for overseas nationals who wish to come to the United Kingdom to undertake supporting religious duties in a non-pastoral capacity. It is designed for those who will work within a faith community or religious order in a supporting role, not as a pastoral leader of a congregation. The visa allows a stay of up to 24 months and is sponsored by a licensed UK faith organisation.
This route replaced the former T5 (Temporary Worker – Religious Worker) visa following the introduction of the UK's points-based immigration system. It is a temporary route that does not lead to settlement in the UK.
Understanding the difference between these two routes is the most important decision for anyone applying to work in a religious capacity in the UK. Applying under the wrong route will result in refusal.
Religious Worker Visa (Temporary Work): For supporting, non-pastoral activities. Working within a religious order, assisting with ceremonies, or carrying out duties that support the faith community without leading it. Up to 24 months. No settlement pathway. No English language requirement.
T2 Minister of Religion Visa: For those who will lead a congregation — preaching, performing religious rites, and undertaking mainly pastoral duties. Can lead to ILR after 5 years. Requires CEFR Level B2 English from 8 January 2026.
In short: if your role involves leading a congregation, you need the T2 Minister of Religion Visa. If your role is supporting, non-pastoral, or based within a religious order without congregational leadership, this Temporary Work route is appropriate. Work Permit Cloud can advise on which route fits your situation.
This visa is for individuals undertaking religious work in a non-pastoral capacity. Eligible roles include:
Roles that are primarily administrative, clerical, or general operational in nature — even if the employer is a faith organisation — do not qualify for this route. Those roles would need to be assessed under the Skilled Worker route if they meet the eligibility criteria.
To qualify for the Religious Worker Visa, you must:
There is no English language requirement for the Religious Worker Visa. The role must be paid at least at National Minimum Wage levels unless it falls within a permitted unpaid exception.
The Religious Worker Visa is granted for up to 24 months, or the period stated on the Certificate of Sponsorship plus 28 days, whichever is shorter. Extensions are possible within the 24-month maximum, provided you continue to meet the eligibility requirements and remain with the same sponsor. You cannot extend beyond the 24-month overall cap. After reaching 24 months, you would need to leave the UK, and a 12-month cooling-off period applies before you can re-apply for entry on this route.
Switching into the Religious Worker Visa from another UK immigration category from inside the UK is not permitted. If you are in the UK on a different visa and wish to change to this route, you must leave and apply from outside the UK.
As a Religious Worker Visa holder, you may:
You may not claim public funds. You may not undertake pastoral leadership roles — preaching and leading worship fall outside this visa's scope. You may not switch into a different visa category from within the UK.
UK faith organisations that wish to sponsor workers under this route must hold a valid Temporary Work Religious Worker sponsor licence from the Home Office. This is a separate licence from the T2 Minister of Religion sponsor licence. Sponsors must meet standard compliance obligations: appointing key personnel, maintaining Appendix D records, and reporting relevant changes through the Sponsor Management System. See the GOV.UK sponsor guidance for full detail.
Work Permit Cloud assists both applicants and faith organisations with the Religious Worker Visa. For applicants, we assess whether your role qualifies under this route or the T2 Minister of Religion route, advise on maintenance fund requirements, and prepare a complete application. For organisations, we advise on sponsor licence applications for the Temporary Work category, assist with CoS preparation, and provide ongoing compliance guidance.

FAQ
The UK Temporary Work Religious Worker Visa is a short-term immigration route for overseas nationals who wish to come to the UK to assist with supporting religious activities for a UK faith organisation. It is for roles that are non-pastoral in nature — such as assisting at religious services, working within a religious order, or carrying out activities that support but do not lead a faith community. The visa is valid for up to 24 months and does not provide a pathway to Indefinite Leave to Remain.
These are two fundamentally different routes for very different roles. The Temporary Work Religious Worker Visa is for supporting, non-pastoral activities — assisting with services, working in a religious order, or carrying out duties that support the faith community without leading it. The T2 Minister of Religion Visa is the correct route for those who will be leading a congregation, preaching, performing rites, and undertaking mainly pastoral duties. The T2 MoR leads to ILR after five years; the Religious Worker Visa is temporary with no settlement pathway. Using the wrong route is a common error that results in visa refusal.
Permitted activities include: assisting at religious services and ceremonies; working within a religious order (such as a monastery or convent) performing duties appropriate to that order; supporting religious community activities in a non-leading capacity; and carrying out religious administrative or practical support duties. They cannot preach, lead services, or perform the main pastoral functions of a minister — those activities require the T2 Minister of Religion Visa.
No. The Temporary Work Religious Worker Visa does not require applicants to demonstrate English language proficiency. This is one of the differences between the Religious Worker Visa and the T2 Minister of Religion Visa, which requires CEFR Level B2 English from 8 January 2026.
Yes. Eligible dependants — including a spouse or civil partner and children under 18 — can apply to accompany or join a Religious Worker Visa holder in the UK, provided the relevant financial and relationship requirements are met. This is different from the Charity Worker Visa, which does not permit dependants.
Yes. The UK faith organisation must hold a valid Home Office sponsor licence for the Temporary Worker Religious Worker category before assigning a Certificate of Sponsorship. Many smaller faith communities may not have held a sponsor licence before and may need professional assistance.
The maximum stay is 24 months per Certificate of Sponsorship. The visa cannot exceed this limit. If an individual wishes to remain in the UK for a longer-term religious role, the T2 Minister of Religion Visa is the appropriate route for those in pastoral positions.
