What Is the Graduate Trainee Visa?

The Graduate Trainee Visa is one of five UK Global Business Mobility (GBM) immigration routes. It is designed for employees of overseas businesses who are enrolled on a structured graduate training programme and who will undertake a work placement at their employer's UK branch or subsidiary as part of that programme. The visa enables multinational companies to develop future leaders and senior specialists across their global operations by giving early-career professionals direct exposure to their UK business.

This route replaced the former Intra-Company Graduate Trainee route in April 2022 when the GBM framework was introduced. It is a temporary visa, it cannot be extended from within the UK, and it does not lead directly to settlement. Its purpose is specific: structured graduate development in the UK context, leading to a future managerial or specialist role.

Who Is This Visa For?

This visa is the right route for you if you are an employee of an overseas company, enrolled in a structured graduate training programme, and being assigned to work at your employer's linked UK operation as part of that programme. The training programme must be designed with clear objectives and must lead to a senior management or specialist role, not simply constitute standard employment at the UK branch.

The visa is not for general graduate hires, fresh UK university graduates seeking UK employment, or workers being assigned to the UK outside the context of a recognised training programme. If you are a senior manager or specialist transferring to a UK branch without being on a graduate programme, the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa is the appropriate route.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Graduate Trainee Visa, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Sponsorship: You must hold a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) issued by a UK employer that holds a Home Office sponsor licence for the Global Business Mobility: Graduate Trainee category.
  • Overseas employment: You must have been employed by the sponsoring overseas business, or by an organisation linked to it by common ownership, for a continuous period of at least three months before the date of your visa application.
  • Training programme: Your role in the UK must form part of a genuine, structured graduate training programme that is designed to lead to a senior managerial or specialist position within the organisation.
  • Eligible occupation: Your job must be listed in Appendix Skilled Occupations of the Immigration Rules as eligible for this route, and must be at RQF Level 6 (graduate level) or above.
  • Salary threshold: You must be paid at least the minimum salary threshold, or 70% of the going rate for your occupation, whichever is higher. For roles in healthcare and education, the full going rate applies rather than the 70% reduction.
  • Maintenance funds: You must demonstrate sufficient funds to support yourself on arrival in the UK, unless your sponsor certifies on the CoS that they will cover your accommodation and living costs during your first month.

No English language test is required for the Graduate Trainee Visa, which distinguishes it from many other UK work routes.

How Long Can You Stay?

The Graduate Trainee Visa is granted for up to 12 months, or the period stated on the Certificate of Sponsorship plus 14 days, whichever is shorter. It cannot be extended from within the UK once granted. If a further placement is required and eligibility is still met, you must leave and apply again from overseas.

Time spent on the Graduate Trainee Visa counts towards the five-year cumulative limit that applies across all Global Business Mobility routes and the predecessor Intra-Company Transfer categories. Once you have spent a cumulative total of five years in any six-year period across these routes, you will not be able to obtain further leave on any GBM route until that six-year window has passed.

What Can You Do on This Visa?

Graduate Trainee Visa holders may:

  • Work for their sponsor in the specific job role described on their Certificate of Sponsorship.
  • Study alongside their sponsored role.
  • Undertake voluntary work.
  • Travel in and out of the UK freely during the visa validity period.
  • Bring eligible dependent family members, including a spouse or civil partner and children under 18, to the UK, subject to meeting the relevant financial and relationship requirements.

Graduate Trainee holders may not take up secondary employment or switch in-country to another visa category. If a longer-term UK work arrangement is needed, the individual must leave and apply under an appropriate route, most commonly the Skilled Worker Visa.

Sponsor Obligations

UK employers sponsoring Graduate Trainees carry significant compliance responsibilities. They must hold a valid GBM: Graduate Trainee sponsor licence, assign Certificates of Sponsorship accurately and in good time, maintain detailed records of the training programme including its structure, objectives, and the trainee's progress, and report any material changes to the worker's circumstances to UKVI through the Sponsor Management System (SMS).

The Immigration Skills Charge does not apply to Graduate Trainee Visa sponsorship, which reduces the cost burden for businesses compared with other sponsored routes. However, the compliance obligations during the sponsored period are the same as for long-term routes, and any failure to meet them can result in downgrade, suspension, or revocation of the sponsor licence. See our sponsor licence compliance guidance for further detail.

There is no annual cap on the number of Graduate Trainees a company can sponsor. Approval depends entirely on the legitimacy and documentation quality of the training programme itself.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the UK Graduate Trainee Visa?

The Graduate Trainee Visa is one of the UK's Global Business Mobility routes. It allows overseas employees on a structured graduate training programme to work at their employer's UK branch as part of that programme, gaining experience towards a future senior management or specialist role.

How long can I stay in the UK on a Graduate Trainee Visa?

The Graduate Trainee Visa is granted for a maximum of 12 months. It cannot be extended from within the UK. Time on this visa counts towards the five-year cumulative limit that applies across all Global Business Mobility routes.

How long must I have worked for my employer before applying for the Graduate Trainee Visa?

You must have been employed by the sponsoring overseas business, or by a linked organisation, for at least three continuous months immediately before the date of your visa application. This is a shorter requirement than for the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa, which requires 12 months.

Is there an English language test for the Graduate Trainee Visa?

No. There is no English language test requirement for the Graduate Trainee Visa. This applies to all Global Business Mobility routes.

Does the Graduate Trainee Visa lead to permanent residency or ILR?

No. The Graduate Trainee Visa is a temporary route and does not lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). If you wish to remain in the UK long-term after your training placement, you would need to apply for a suitable long-term route, most commonly the Skilled Worker Visa, from outside the UK.

Can I bring my family to the UK on a Graduate Trainee Visa?

Yes. Eligible dependent family members, including a spouse or civil partner and children under 18, can apply to accompany or join you in the UK, provided the relevant financial and relationship requirements are met.

Does the Graduate Trainee Visa attract the Immigration Skills Charge?

No. The Immigration Skills Charge does not apply to Graduate Trainee Visa sponsorship, making it more cost-effective for employers compared with routes such as the Skilled Worker Visa. However, the employer must hold a valid sponsor licence for the GBM: Graduate Trainee category.

What is the difference between the Graduate Trainee Visa and the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa?

The Graduate Trainee Visa is for employees enrolled in a formal graduate training programme leading to a future senior or specialist role, and is granted for up to 12 months with a shorter 3-month employment history requirement. The Senior or Specialist Worker Visa is for experienced senior managers and specialists being transferred to an existing UK operation, requires 12 months of prior employment with the group, and can be granted for longer periods with renewal possible from within the UK.
