What Is the Business Visit Visa?

The "Business Visit Visa" is not a separate immigration category in the UK's Immigration Rules. It is the widely used term for the business sub-category of the Standard Visitor Visa. If you are coming to the UK for business purposes, you are applying for a Standard Visitor Visa. The type of activities you intend to carry out determines whether the visit is appropriate under the business visitor provisions.

The activities permitted for business visitors are set out in Appendix Visitor: Permitted Activities (PA 4 to 12) of the Immigration Rules. Understanding what is and is not permitted is essential, because crossing the line from permitted business activity into work, even unintentionally, creates an immigration compliance risk for both the visitor and the UK business they are visiting.

Who Needs a Visa and Who Needs an ETA?

Exactly as with tourist visits, whether you need a visa before travelling depends on your nationality:

  • Visa nationals must obtain a Standard Visitor Visa approved before travelling, even for a single-day business trip.
  • Non-visa nationals (including EU citizens from 2 April 2025, and other non-visa nationals from January 2025) must obtain an ETA before travel. From 25 February 2026, airlines check ETA approval at boarding.

In every case, whether you enter with a visa or ETA, the scope of permitted business activities is identical. The ETA changes the pre-travel permission mechanism, not the substance of what you can do in the UK.

What You Are Permitted to Do as a Business Visitor

Under Appendix Visitor: Permitted Activities (PA 4 and 5), business visitors may carry out the following activities in the UK:

  • Attend meetings, conferences, seminars, and interviews.
  • Negotiate and sign contracts on behalf of an overseas employer.
  • Attend trade fairs, exhibitions, and promotional events — provided the activity is limited to promotion and does not involve selling directly to the public.
  • Give a one-off or short series of talks and speeches, provided the event is not run as a commercial venture and will not make a profit.
  • Carry out site visits, inspections, and troubleshooting for work that is being or will be delivered by your overseas employer.
  • Gather information for your employer overseas and be briefed on a UK customer's requirements, provided the actual delivery of any work for that customer takes place outside the UK.
  • Intra-corporate activities: work on a specific internal project with UK employees of the same corporate group, provided you are employed by the overseas company and the activity supports your overseas role.
  • Receive work-related training from a UK-based organisation, if the training is not available in your home country and forms part of your overseas employment.
  • Undertake activities relating to your employment overseas remotely from within the UK — for example, answering emails or joining calls for your overseas employer — provided this is not the primary purpose of your visit to the UK.

What You Cannot Do as a Business Visitor

  • Take up employment with a UK company or organisation.
  • Receive payment from a UK source for services rendered in the UK.
  • Be integrated into a UK role, team, or workflow in any way that constitutes filling a position in the UK labour market.
  • Sell goods or services directly to the UK public.
  • Conduct productive work in the UK for a UK client, unless the overseas company is delivering under a supply contract with that client.
  • Stay in the UK for extended periods through repeat visits that amount to de facto residence.

The distinction between permitted business activity and prohibited work is one of the most frequently misunderstood areas of UK immigration law. The test is not simply whether the visitor is being paid. It is whether the activity constitutes supplying labour to the UK market or filling a role in a UK organisation. For those whose activities go beyond the business visitor provisions, a Skilled Worker Visa or a Global Business Mobility visa may be the appropriate route instead.

Consistency Is Critical

Home Office caseworkers and Border Force officers assess business visitor applications based on the internal consistency of what you declare. The activities described in your visa application, the letters of invitation from your UK host, the documents you carry, and your answers at the border must all tell the same clear story. Inconsistencies, even minor ones, raise credibility concerns that can lead to refusal or curtailment of leave.

If Border Force concludes that the activities you intend to undertake amount to work rather than permitted business visiting, they may refuse your entry at the port of entry even if you hold a valid visa or ETA. Carrying clear documentation of your planned activities and the business relationship is strongly advisable.

The Employer's Perspective

UK businesses that regularly invite overseas professionals to visit for business purposes should be aware of their own compliance responsibilities. If visitors are found to have been working in the UK without the correct permission, even where the business was unaware, this can attract civil penalty exposure and, for sponsor licence holders, jeopardise the licence.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the UK Business Visit Visa?

The UK Business Visit Visa is not a separate visa — it is a category of the Standard Visitor Visa that permits specific business-related activities in the UK. It allows overseas professionals to attend meetings, conferences, and negotiations, conduct site visits, attend trade fairs, and carry out certain intra-company activities. The full list of permitted activities is set out in Appendix Visitor: Permitted Activities (PA) of the UK Immigration Rules.

What can I do on a UK Business Visit Visa?

Permitted activities include: attending meetings, conferences, and negotiations; conducting site visits and troubleshooting; attending trade fairs as an exhibitor or visitor; receiving training on UK systems or products at a UK group company; conducting research or fact-finding; making business decisions and signing contracts; and performing certain intra-company activities. You cannot take on employment, provide services directly to UK clients as a contracted worker, or be paid by a UK source for your work.

What is the difference between a business visit and working in the UK?

A business visit means attending, observing, meeting, or training — activities that do not involve you being employed by or delivering services to a UK entity for payment. Working in the UK means performing tasks for a UK employer or client who benefits from your labour, or providing services under a contract with a UK business. If your activities involve the latter, a visitor visa is not appropriate and you would need a work visa. See our Skilled Worker Visa or Global Business Mobility pages for alternatives.

Do EU nationals need a visa or ETA for a business visit to the UK?

EU nationals do not need a Standard Visitor Visa for business visits to the UK. However, since 2 April 2025, EU nationals must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. The ETA costs £16 per person and is linked to the traveller's passport. It must be obtained before each trip to the UK.

Can I work remotely for my overseas employer while on a UK Business Visit Visa?

This is a nuanced area. The Home Office's guidance states that business visitors may carry out incidental work that is part of their overseas employment role while in the UK. However, spending most of your UK visit working remotely on day-to-day tasks for your overseas employer, rather than on a specific time-limited UK business purpose, is likely to cross the line from a genuine visit into working in the UK without permission. Professional advice is strongly recommended for hybrid scenarios.

How long can I stay in the UK on a Business Visit Visa?

Business visitors, like all Standard Visitor Visa holders, may stay for up to six months per visit. There is no minimum stay requirement. Most business visits are short — days to a few weeks. If you intend to spend extended periods in the UK for business purposes, this may indicate that a work visa is more appropriate for your situation.

Can I extend a Business Visit Visa from within the UK?

No. Standard Visitor Visas, including those used for business visits, cannot be extended from within the UK. If you need to remain beyond your permitted stay, you must leave and reapply from outside the UK. You cannot switch from a visitor visa to a work visa from within the UK.
