What Is The UK Shortage Occupation List?

The shortage Occupation List is a list of occupations where there is a shortage of skilled workers in the UK. The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) provides recommendations for roles to be included on this list, taking into consideration meeting the needs of UK businesses.

Which industries have job positions listed on the shortage occupation list?

The shortage occupation list in the UK includes job positions across various sectors. Sectors such as: Health and social care, creative, therapy, education, professional, IT, science and Engineering,

It's important to note that the shortage occupation list is subject to change and is regularly reviewed and updated by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) in the UK.

What are the advantages for jobs on the shortage occupation list?

Jobs included on the shortage occupation list offer several advantages for both employers and skilled workers. Here are some key benefits:

  1. Lower minimum salary requirements:

If an employer is hiring someone for a position that is on the shortage occupation list, the employer can take advantage of lower salary thresholds. They are permitted to pay 80% of the job's usual going rate, resulting in cost savings for organisations. These salaries are typically based on a 37.5-hour working week, ensuring a more affordable hiring process.

  1. 20 tradeable points in the Points-Based System:

Under the points-based system, candidates must accumulate a minimum of 70 points to qualify for a skilled worker visa. A role on the shortage occupation list is worth 20 tradeable points. When combined with other mandatory criteria, such as meeting English language requirements, getting an offer from a licensed sponsor, and holding the required skill level of RQF level 3 or above (worth 50 points), candidates in these roles meet the necessary 70-point threshold.

  1. Reduced Visa Application Fees and Potential Exemptions

Candidates employed in healthcare roles listed on the shortage occupation list, will benefit from lower UK visa application fees and exemptions from paying the immigration health surcharge (IHS). For instance, a care worker applying for a visa would only need to pay £247 for the application fee and be exempt from the IHS. In contrast, skilled workers not on the shortage occupation list would need to pay £625 or more for the application fee and £624 per year for the IHS.

  1. Employment Opportunities for Asylum Seekers:

Asylum seekers with an ARC card and granted the right to work can seek employment in jobs listed on the shortage occupation list. This inclusion provides an avenue for them to secure work and contribute their skills and expertise to sectors experiencing skill shortages.

By leveraging the advantages offered by jobs on the shortage occupation list, employers can access a more diverse talent pool and fill critical vacancies. Skilled workers benefit from improved employment prospects, potential cost savings, and streamlined immigration processes, facilitating their professional growth and development.

It's worth noting that the specific advantages and eligibility criteria may vary depending on the unique circumstances of organizations and employees. It is advisable for both employers and workers to seek professional guidance before proceeding with visa applications or hiring individuals under the shortage occupation list.
