UK Home Office Sponsorship Management System

What is the Sponsorship Management System?

The Sponsorship Management System (SMS) is an online system used by UK employers to sponsor non-British workers under Tier 2 (Skilled Worker Route), Tier 5 (Temporary Worker Route) or Global Business Mobility route of the Point-Based system.

The SMS allows UK Sponsor Licence holders to manage their sponsored workers and report any changes to their sponsorship information.

Employers are also required to comply with their sponsor duties, such as keeping accurate records of their sponsored workers and reporting any violations of the terms of their sponsorship to the Home Office.

What can I do with the Sponsorship Management System?

A Sponsor Licence holder can use the SMS to:

  • manage or renew your organisation’s sponsor licence
  • create and assign Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) to foreign workers you wish to sponsor
  • apply for defined CoS for Skilled Workers
  • report changes of circumstances of your sponsored workers, such as change of address
  • withdraw CoS

Who can log into the Sponsorship Management System?

Only organisations who hold a Sponsor Licence can log into SMS. Once your Sponsor Licence application is approved by the Home Office, you will be given access to the SMS.

You must be an appointed Level 1 or 2 user to access SMS and to use any functions in the system. Level 1 and Level 2 users are the key contact you appointed when you apply for the Sponsor Licence. However, Level 1 and Level 2 users have different functions they can perform to the system.

  • Level 1 user – Responsible for carrying out day-to-day sponsorship activities using the SMS, such as create and assign CoS, report changes of sponsored workers, withdraw CoS and renew sponsor licence etc.
  • Level 2 user – have fewer permissions than Level 1 users, can only create and assign CoS, report worker activities in respect of any CoS they have created and assigned.

How can I find my SMS login details?

When your Sponsor Licence is granted, the Home Office will send the login ID for SMS by post to the Authorising Officer. The password is sent directly to the email address of the Level 1 user nominated in the Sponsor Licence Application. Your Authorising Officer needs to provide the login details to the Level 1 user.

How often do I need to log into the SMS?

You need to access your SMS account regularly to review and update your licence details and to keep up to date with the latest news, messages, and any changes that may be coming up. It is recommended by the Home Office that your Level 1 User accesses your SMS account at least once a month.
